Freshman year is full of new opportunities and a new environment. You are thrown into a place where you know no one and are expected to take initiative of yourself. As an incoming freshman, I wanted to be involved as much as I could. Looking on the Class of 2021 Facebook group, there was a flyer that invited all incoming students to audition for Dance Company. The Audition was that Sunday in the Campus Center gym. Not knowing what I was getting myself into, I went. That Sunday, I put on a t-shirt and running shorts and walked to auditions. I was greeted by people that I would once call my friends and music playing from a small speaker next to them. They handed me my audition packet that included a name tag with the number “7”, my lucky number. At that moment, I knew I was supposed to be there. At 5 o’clock the audition process started with warming up. The E-Board led a stretch while engaging in conversation and dance running around the gym trying to make everyone feel welcomed and excited. After the warm up finished, the E-Board taught all 50 of us auditioning the piece we would be learning that evening. It was a 30 second piece of choreography to a song I wasn’t familiar with but everyone else seemed to know it. After about an hour of learning the piece, we had a 10 minute break to eat, drink water or go over the dance. I chose to run the dance over and over until I was happy with my outcome. While going over the dance the music shut off and all that was said was “numbers 1 through 7 are up to perform the piece!”. After performing I was told to look out for an email saying if I was in Dance Company. The next day during my College Writing class I received an email from the secretary of Dance Company saying that I made it and that our first company rehearsal was that Sunday. Looking back at it, that Sunday changed my college career by giving me a place that I feel comfortable and gained leadership opportunities such as being a choreographer and E-Board member.
